Greenhouses
Greenhouses are structures made of either glass or plastic,
which utilize solar radiation in order to create a warm and humid environment
for plant-life. These structures can be large or small and vary in shape.
A greenhouse may have an automated system or can be run manually. When
it comes to building a greenhouse, be aware of the following elements:
• Location
• Foundation
• Cooling
• Heating
• Air Circulation
Greenhouses should always receive maximum sunlight possible. Build
in areas that are rarely shaded or shaded only in the afternoon or early
evening. The South and Southeast areas of the house or building are
usually the best areas. During winter an east side area is the best
location. The northern area of a building or home is the least likely
place to build a greenhouse structure unless growing plants that require
minimal sunlight.
Preparation work will include leveling. Always create a level area
for a greenhouse. However, permanent flooring is not recommended because
it can become slippery or compromised. Greenhouses and greenhouse kits
usually come with some base material such as cedar or cypress or even
treated wood that won’t decay. If constructing a concrete foundation,
creating a walkway or center area versus an entire base is recommended.
